Genealogical Record of Patrick Stewart of Miltown (Ballavulin) of Borenich.

Patrick Stewart was born 17th September 1752, the son of Alexander Stewart in Knockgarry, Factor to John Stewart, 8th of Bonskeid.

Blair Atholl, 1752
Alexander Stewart in Knockgharie and Margaret Stewart his wife had a child born September 17th, baptised 22nd, named Patrick

Patrick's elder brother, Charles, and Marjory Stewart in Ardtulichan were proclaimed for marriage at Blair Atholl on 19th November 1773. As eldest son, Charles would be expected to eventually take over the lease for Knockgarry, and if Patrick married there would not be enough room to support two families. Knockgarry probably was being rebuilt in 1776 as Charles and Marjory's second child was born at Uchdnanetaig, before the family moved back into Knockgarry. Patrick moved from Knockgarry to the adjacent homestead of Balcastle at around the same time, and this is where Patrick was living when he married Jean Stewart.

Blair Atholl, 1776
Patrick Stewart in Balchastel and Jean Stewart in Kirkton of Struan (married) 15th February.

The couple had nine children between 1776 and 1796, and the size of the family increased Patrick moved his family to Nethertown of Borenich. Nethertown of Borenich was also called Balinloin in early documents and is shown on James Scobie's map of 1783 as Laightown. The name of the homestead seems to change to Miltown of Borenich between 1785 and 1790, which may indicate the date that the mill was built. Linen was woven in Strathtummel right up until the 1850s, and the 1841 census shows that Isabella Robertson and Ann Kennedy in Tomanbuie were lint spinners, suggesting that the lint mill was still in use.

Blair Atholl, 1776
Patrick Stewart in Balacastle and Jean Stewart his wife had a child born the nineteenth, baptised the twenty third of November, named Alexander

Blair Atholl, 1778
Patrick Stewart in Balchastle and Jean Stewart his wife had a lawful son born the seventeenth and baptised the twentieth of July, named James

Blair Atholl, 1779
Patrick Stewart in Borenich and Jean Stewart his wife had a son born December 18th, baptised 22nd, named Patrick

Blair Atholl, 1783
Patrick Stewart in Borenich and Jean Stewart his wife had a son born 9th of May and baptised 13th, named Charles

Blair Atholl, 1785
Patrick Stewart in Nethertown of Borenich and Jean Stewart his wife had a child born 9th and baptised 13th May, named Margaret

Blair Atholl, 1790

Alexander 'Ban' Stewart

It is thought that Alexander 'Ban' Stewart married Margaret McFarlane shortly before they emigrated to Nova Scotia. The Fortingall OPR seems to record this marriage but there are a couple of strange points. Firstly the same entry appears for the 8th March 1801 and also the 5th April 1801.

Fortingall, 1801
Alexander Stewart and Margaret Stewart both in Craganour in this parish (married) 8th March
Alexander Stewart and Margaret Stewart both in Craganour in this parish (married) 5th April

The second oddity is that Alexander Stewart was living at Craganour, Fortingall and not in his home parish. As eldest son, he would have been expected to take over the tenancy after his father's death. Certainly, the family had not been evicted as the youngest son, James 'Ban', was still living at Miltown of Borenich when he married in 1826.

One explanation put forward, has been that Alexander's mother died after the birth of James 'Ban' in 1796, and that in the following year his father married a woman from Fortingall parish. Afterwards both Patrick and his son, Alexander 'Ban', were living in the parish of Fortingall. This suggestion is supported by an entry in the Fortingall OPR.

Fortingall, 1797
Peter Stewart in the parish of Blair in Athole and Janet McFarlane in this parish (married) 15th September.

However, considering the young ages of Patrick's children, one might have expected the new bride to have taken over the family in Blair Atholl. There are no recorded births in Blair Atholl from this marriage.

A genealogical note by one of Alexander's descendant states that "our great, great grandfather Peter Stewart married a second wife called McFarlin but had no children, but a niece that she adopted - Margaret McFarlin. Our great grandfather, Alexander Stewart, married Margaret McFarlin, the adopted daughter of his step-mother."

Another possibility is that Alexander was in hiding. On 19th January 1799, Alexander Stewart of Milntown of Bourannoch came before the magistrates in Perth to claim illegal enlistment (Militia Petition Record PE 66/11). "Stewart thought he was being signed up as a servant to a gentleman in Edinburgh, whereas he was signing up for the army. He has to pay smart money to be released (from the 1st Battalion, Royal Regiment)". Those involved with the case were Lieutenant John Moon, Sir Vere Hunt's regiment, Captain Blair, 1st Royals, Thomas Mill, vintner in Perth and John Cameron.

Whatever did happened, Alexander Stewart, tenant and Margaret Stewart, spinster appear on the emigrant passenger list of the 'Dove' which sailed from Fort William to Pictou, Nova Scotia in June 1801. They were the only passengers from Blair Atholl on the ship. They arrived in September 1801, spending some years in Pictou and the East River St. Marys area before arriving at Lochaber Lake in 1815, where they prospered and raised a large family.

Alexander 'Ban' Stewart and his wife, Margaret McFarlane, are both buried in the North Lochaber cemetery and are commemorated there.

Patrick (Peter) Stewart

Patrick Stewart married Isabella 'Nellie' Cameron, but the place and date are unknown. Luckily his monument in the West River cemetery says that he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1801, the same year as his older brother. As his eldest child, Jane, was born in 1813, this suggests that Patrick had been in Nova Scotia for some time before he married Isabella Cameron.

Patrick Stewart and Isabella Cameron are buried in the Stewart cemetery at West River Station, as are their children Peter, Mary and Robert, together with Robert's wife Eliza McDonald.

One curious coincidence is that the following entry can be found in the Blair Atholl OPR.

Blair Atholl, 1819
Patrick Stewart in Milntown of Borennich and Margaret Cameron in Pitcastle, parish of Logierait married August 8th.

Obviously this is a different Patrick Stewart of Milltown of Borenich who is marrying a Cameron, but who is he in this small community? Possibly this is his cousin Patrick (b 20 June 1782), the son of Charles Stewart of Knockgharie.

As already mentioned, the mill was probably built between 1785 and 1790 by Patrick Stewart. Patrick Stewart's son James died in childhood and another son, Charles, drowned in a river, so that when Alexander 'Ban' and Patrick jnr both emigrated in 1801, his oldest remaining son, John, would have been only eleven years old. Under these circumstances it is probable that his brother Charles, or Charles's son helped him with the processing of the flax.

James 'Ban' Stewart

The youngest son, James 'Ban' married twice. His first wife was Margaret Stewart

Blair Atholl, 1820
James Stewart in Borenich and Margaret Stewart in Calvine (married) 6th August.

The couple had two children, Peter and Girsel (Grace), but Margaret Stewart died soon after the birth of Girsel.

Blair Atholl, 1821
James Stewart in Milltown of Borenich and Margaret Stewart his wife had a son born May 12th, baptised 16th, named Peter

Blair Atholl, 1823
James Stewart in Milltown of Borenich and Margaret Stewart his wife had a daughter born May 28th, baptised 30th, named Girsel

After the death of his first wife, James 'Ban' married Janet Stewart, the daughter of John Stewart and Grissel Stewart of Balcastle who had moved to Knockgarry around 1805. When James 'Ban' and Janet Stewart emigrated to Canada in 1833, Peter and Grisel would have been twelve and ten years old, respectively. Although A. S. Ross's "Genealogical Record of the Loch Tummel Branch of the Clan Stewart (1712 - 1912)" does not mention them as is concerned only with the family of Janet Stewart, we know that Peter and Grisel were with them as part of the family.

Peter married Isabella Stewart, daughter of 'Big' John Stewart on the 14th July 1851. The couple settled on the Pugwash River where they had eight children: Annie (1852); John Allen (1852); Margaret (1857); Grace Elizabeth (1859); Janet MacDonald (1861); Mary Jane (1864); Isabella Christy (1867); and James R. (1871).

Gravestones in the Palmerston Pugwash cemetery record that Peter died 2nd Decemebr 1882, aged 62 and that his wife, Isabella, was born 6th March 1828 and died 27th march 1911, aged 83.

Girsel, or Grace, married Malcolm MacKinnon and lived in Lochaber with her husband. There is a gravestone in the North Lochaber cemetery next to the Stewart family stones which records that Grace McKinnon died 20th December 1900 aged 77. There is no mention of her husband.
